Welcome.

I’m Suzan Colón, author of Cherries in Winter: My Family’s Recipe for Hope in Hard Times (Doubleday) and Yoga Mind: Journey Beyond the Physical (Simon & Schuster), and creator of medKNITation, a form of meditation through knitting and crochet. This is the home of the Yoga Mind program, news about medKNITation, and more.

The Power of Connection.

I’ve felt the power of connection, and how necessary it is, when I worked at O, The Oprah Magazine. I edited Ms. Winfrey’s interviews with spiritual leaders such as Pema Chödrön, Thich Nhat Hanh, Eckhart Tolle, and others. I also wrote about my own spiritual growth occurring not through visits to a mountaintop but by being present in daily life. Each month, I’d read letters from hundreds of readers saying Yes. That was meaningful for me. I felt heard, understood.

Another time of great connection was during years of studying Yoga and Yoga philosophy (Raja Yoga) at various ashrams. What I learned was, again, not meant to be experienced only in “perfect” conditions in the countryside at sunrise, but at rush hour on a city subway. That’s the real test of spiritual balance!

In 2008, when the economy collapsed and all seemed lost, I searched for a book that would give me hope. I couldn’t find one, so I wrote one. Thousands of people told me that Cherries in Winter helped them get through that difficult time and other challenging events in their lives.

Years later, I wrote about a deep, spiritual connection in my book Yoga Mind: Journey Beyond the Physical. I told the story of how my friend Francesco, paralyzed after a diving accident, became my greatest Yoga teacher—from his wheelchair. People (many of them not into traditional Yoga) used the 30-day spiritual program in the book to feel more connected with themselves, which helped them connect with others.

Our need for connection, with others and with our true selves, is growing. I hope to contribute to that by writing about what I’ve always written about—daily, extraordinary life.
