This week I am teaching a drawing workshop, and today I was talking with the group about prioritizing. (Someone said as she was drawing and feeling so happy about it, “why am I not doing this every day??” So that made us talk about how to create habits and how to prioritize the things you want to do. )
I think prioritizing is what you’re doing when committing your crime of stealing time. Or reprioritizing. I do it a lot with calendar items. They get moved, rescheduled, split into separate actions... and sometimes I reschedule a planned item a lot - it makes me realize that maybe it’s not that important at all and I could possibly just scratch it off the calendar.
I hope Sherman’s heart condition won’t be a problem!
“Prioritizing” sounds so much better than “stealing”! And yes, I love the realization of “Why am I not doing this every day?” And, preferably, before all the other things we put before what is truly important to us. Hope you’re having as great a time at your workshop as the people attending! You’re helping them develop a creative habit that will stay with them always.
I cannot do it all and some days I can't do it at all. Powerful words, right there. I feel completely seen.
I am slowly learning that there needs to be some bend or flexibility. If everything stays rigid and fixed each day, there will be disappointment and guilt and no one has time for that! I like to make a list of things that I need to do and spread them out over the week. That way it feels more manageable.
This came at a perfect time for me. I've been feeling overwhelmed this week and I gave up my morning yoga to allow myself more time to sleep. At first I felt bad because I hadn't missed a day since the first of the year, but I think I needed the break. I'm starting to miss it and it feels right to get back at it. I let myself take the space I needed...for once.
I've tried a few times to use one of those systems of prioritizing, and it all ends up looking like the same to-do list. I look back over the pages and think, Well, if I didn't get to it, how important could it have been?
First of all; that drawing is gold.
Days like that... oh wow, it asks a lot from you!

Oh, and Sherman is doing fine, and likely will for some time. Thank you!
I’m so glad!

That sounds so reasonable, Deb. Giving yourself time is realistic and kind.

Let's hope giving yourself space, and permission, to do what you need to do for yourself becomes your new Yoga practice, Brenda!
I agree with the theme below about PRIORITIZING. And making a list to see what is important today, and what can wait.

I hear ya, yesterday was a super jerk Monday. Glad it's over and glad you stole some time! I need to do that more often.
Start stealing this weekend, Mya! I highly recommend it.
