There is so much to do.
For many of us, life’s to-do list resembles Jack Kerouac’s original manuscript for On the Road: one long scroll. We check off one thing, and we add three more. While we’re doing that one thing, our minds are already on the next task, the place we have to be after that, and, in between, the thing we forgot yesterday. (We think we’ll remember this time. We won’t.)
The end of the day is a review of things done and not, mostly the “not” column. When I started working in the 1980s, the concept of being done with work, at least for the week, was still a thing. Now, when we can be reached anywhere, any time, the idea of being done is the only thing that is truly done.
With all this busyness, it’s easy to lose sight of what’s underneath that endless scroll of to-dos: our thoughts. Our state of mind. The direction the heart’s compass is pointing in. Our intuition. Our inner peace. In other words, our true self.
Connection with the true self is vital. It keeps us from thinking that the Busy Mind is our reality, making us sing the Talking Heads lyrics, “How did I get here?”
